فترة ما قبل انقطاع الطمث هي عملية فسيولوجية في حياة المرأة تسبق انقطاع الطمث وتتميز بتغيرات هرمونية كبيرة. خلال هذه الفترة، التي يمكن أن تستمر لعدة سنوات، تتقلب مستويات الهرمونات، مما يسبب أعراضاً جسدية وعاطفية.
تشمل الأعراض: الهبّات الساخنة والتعرّق الليلي وتغيرات الدورة الشهرية (عدم انتظام الدورة الشهرية وغزارة الدورة الشهرية أو غزارتها) وجفاف المهبل وتغيرات المزاج ومشاكل النوم والإرهاق والتغيرات في الرغبة الجنسية. تختلف هذه الأعراض من امرأة إلى أخرى ويمكن أن تؤثر على جودة الحياة.
يعتمد التشخيص على وجود أعراض مرتبطة بالعمر لدى المرأة. في بعض الحالات، قد يلزم إجراء اختبارات الدم لقياس مستويات الهرمونات واستبعاد الحالات الطبية الأخرى.
يتضمن العلاج تغييرات في نمط الحياة، مثل اتباع نظام غذائي صحي وممارسة التمارين الرياضية بانتظام، والعلاج الهرموني لتخفيف الأعراض الأكثر حدة. هناك أيضًا خيارات غير هرمونية، مثل المكملات العشبية وأدوية معينة للسيطرة على الأعراض.
