És una malaltia infecciosa molt virulenta causada pel virus de l'Ebola, amb una mortalitat propera al 60 %.
Només el transmeten les persones malaltes (no, les persones portadores sense símptomes), per contacte amb secrecions corporals, sang o teixits implantats.
Es manifesta amb febre alta i dolor muscular, mal de cap, dolor en empassar, vòmits i/o sagnats (hematomes, sagnat pel nas, sagnat digestiu, sagnat de l'aparell respiratori). Altres símptomes menys freqüents: dolor en articulacions, diarrea, dolor abdominal i desgana.
S'ha de sospitar si hi ha hagut contacte previ amb persones de les àrees endèmiques (Libèria, Sierra Leone, Guinea Conakry i Nigèria). Es confirmarà mitjançant exàmens de laboratori.
No existeix un tractament específic. S'han de tractar els símptomes mitjançant els analgèsics habituals per al control del dolor i assegurant una correcta hidratació i alimentació.
