Es handelt sich um braune Flecken, die durch die Anhäufung von Melanin verursacht werden und symmetrisch an Stellen auftreten, die der Sonne ausgesetzt sind. Es gibt zwei Arten von Melasma, epidermal und dermal, je nachdem, wo sich das Melanin ansammelt. Es betrifft vor allem Frauen, insbesondere solche, die schwanger sind oder orale Verhütungsmittel einnehmen.
Es wird durch eine erhöhte Melaninproduktion verursacht, die auf Veränderungen des Hormonspiegels zurückzuführen ist.
Die Diagnose erfolgt klinisch, obwohl die Wood-Lampe manchmal verwendet werden kann, um einen Melaninüberschuss in der Haut zu bestätigen.
Sie erfordert eine langfristige Behandlung, die darauf abzielt, die Läsionen aufzuhellen. Dabei wird eine Kombination aus Cremes, Peelings, Lasern und gepulstem Licht eingesetzt. Vorbeugung mit Sonnenschutzmitteln mit hohem Lichtschutzfaktor ist das ganze Jahr über sehr wichtig. Es ist nicht ansteckend und entwickelt sich nicht zu Hautkrebs, kann aber nicht geheilt werden.
