Symptoms that appear when eating eggs or products containing eggs in their composition. It is more common in children because their digestive system is more immature.
The cause is the proteins contained in this food, which activate the body's immune system. They can be found in foods and in the composition of some vaccines.
Symptoms usually appear within minutes/hours after contact. It manifests with skin rash, hives, nasal congestion, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal cramps. More severe cases may present with respiratory distress, shortness of breath, even anaphylactic reaction and death.
Diagnosis is clinical by checking symptoms against ingestion of egg-containing food. Allergy skin tests, food challenge tests and blood tests can be performed for confirmation.
Contact with these proteins should be avoided whenever possible. Mild reactions can be treated with antihistamines, but in severe cases intramuscular epinephrine is necessary.
