A histrionic personality is characterized by a dramatic and emotionally exaggerated pattern of behavior in which the person constantly seeks to be the center of attention and to present a seductive and attractive image to others. It affects women more than men and is more common in young people.
Causes may be related to genetic, biological, and environmental factors.
Symptoms include a constant need to be the center of attention, a tendency to be touchy and manipulative, a constant search for approval, and an exaggeration of emotional expression. People with this disorder may have difficulty maintaining stable and satisfying interpersonal relationships and may experience feelings of emptiness and insecurity when they are not the center of attention.
Diagnosis of Histrionic Personality Disorder is based on a thorough evaluation of the patient's symptoms and behaviors.
Treatment for this disorder may include psychological therapy, group therapy, and, in some cases, medication.
