Intestinal obstruction due to loss of tone in the intestine - Paralytic ileus

Medium urgency
--

Intestinal obstruction due to ileus is the loss of motility or normal peristalsis of the intestine, preventing the passage of secretions and food.

It can occur in both the small and large intestine and is due to a disorder of its musculature, which remains without tone. The most common cause is abdominal surgery.

It presents with pain, abdominal distension, hyperperistalsis (metallic intestinal noises), inability to evacuate flatulence and may be accompanied by vomiting of fecal contents.

The presumptive diagnosis is based on clinical history and physical examination and is confirmed by imaging studies.

The precipitating cause, if known, should be eliminated and proper hydration should be provided. In many cases, it is necessary to feed the patient intravenously until bowel motility is restored.
