Meckel's diverticulum (Pediatrics - PEDS)

Low urgency
--
It is the inflammation of Meckel's diverticulum, a pocket in the wall of the lower part of the small intestine that is present at birth (congenital) and it is present in a small proportion of the population. The inflammation usually occurs secondary to an infection. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort or pain ranging from mild to severe, presence of blood in the stool, and nausea and vomiting. The diagnosis is reached through clinical questioning, physical examination and additional tests such as blood and stool tests, imaging tests such as CT scan and/or Scintigraphy. Surgery is recommended to remove the diverticulum in case of bleeding.
