The incidence of patients experiencing symptoms after the acute phase of COVID-19 infection is very high (20-90%).
The cause of post-COVID-19 illness is unknown, but it has been observed to be more common in patients who have had severe COVID-19 resulting in admission to an intensive care unit.
Symptoms vary widely, with the most common being fatigue, headache, and shortness of breath. Other common symptoms include cough, hair loss, poor concentration and memory, nausea and vomiting, loss of taste, abdominal pain, joint pain, etc.
Diagnosis is clinical, based on a history of COVID-19 infection and symptoms appearing at least 3 weeks after acute infection.
Treatment involves the collaboration of multiple specialists who develop therapeutic, rehabilitative, and individualized care plans to facilitate comprehensive patient care and improve quality of life.
