It is a disease characterized by the presence of placental or fetal tissue remaining inside the uterus after vaginal delivery, cesarean section or abortion.
It presents with genital bleeding and prolonged pelvic pain of variable intensity.
Diagnosis is based on the patient's symptomatology, laboratory findings (human gonadotropin hormone values) and ultrasound.
Expectant management may be chosen, awaiting spontaneous expulsion of the retained debris. In more severe cases, medical treatment with misoprostol or surgical treatment may be chosen.
