Salicylate poisoning

Medium urgency
-Moderately severe
Salicylates are a group of compounds derived from salicylic acid (aspirin) and are very commonly used drugs. When someone accidentally or deliberately takes more than the recommended dose of this medication, poisoning may occur. The most common symptoms are tinnitus, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, coma and respiratory or kidney problems may occur. Diagnosis will be made by means of a clinical interview, physical examination and laboratory tests, including blood and urine tests and measurement of the levels in the blood. There is no specific antidote for acute salicylate intoxication. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal can be considered. Complications should be treated with supportive care. It may be necessary to carry out dialysis to remove the excess of the drug.
