Salmonellosis

Low urgency
CommonModerately severe

Salmonellosis is a gastrointestinal infection caused by non-typhoidal Salmonella.

It is transmitted through contaminated food or water.

The typical clinical presentation is characterized by fever, headache, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Diagnosis is made by detailed clinical history and complete physical examination.

Symptoms improve without specific treatment. Antibiotic treatment should only be given to those with risk factors such as young children, the elderly, patients with chronic diseases and/or an impaired immune system.
