Septic arthritis (Pediatrics - PEDS)

Medium urgency
-Moderately severe
It is the inflammation of a joint due to an infection caused by a germ (usually a bacterium) that reaches the area through the blood. It is more common in babies and infants below three years old, especially in the knee, ankle and hip. There is pain and inflammation and sometimes it may be red and feel hot to the touch. Sometimes the refusal to walk or a limp may be the only symptoms. Fever is not always present. Physical examination, blood tests, testing the fluid in the joint and x-rays may be required for diagnosis. Treatment is urgent and with prolonged antibiotics. It is advisable to extract the pus from the joint; operating may even be required. It is an emergency that must be treated in a hospital with pediatrics and surgery departments to prevent consequences for mobility.
