Tibial fracture

Medium urgency
--

It is the break of the tibia or bone of the "shin" located in the leg. This fracture can be open (with exposure of the bone to the outside) or closed (without opening of the skin).

It is usually due to a fall, accident, or a medical problem such as osteoporotic wear and tear or bone tumors/metastases.

The most common symptoms are: pain, hematoma or bleeding, swelling, difficulty of mobility and inability to stand.

Diagnosis is clinical by history of the event and physical examination, although an X-ray is required to confirm the diagnosis and study the state of the bone.

Treatment is based on reducing and immobilizing the fracture with a cast, or by surgery with the aid of pins and screws (open fracture). Analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs will be used to reduce pain and swelling. Avoid resting your leg until the bone has completely healed. If a cast is placed and lesions appear on the skin, the color of the toes changes, they swell or you notice any strange symptoms, it is advisable to see your doctor for an evaluation.
