Torn muscle

Very low urgency
--

A muscle tear is a break in muscle fibers in the body. It is classified in different degrees depending on the type of injury and the affected muscle.

Common causes include a direct blow or contusion, an excessive stretching of the muscle (exceeds its stretchability) or an abrupt contraction of the muscle.

It manifests with pain, hematoma, inflammation and loss of ability to contract (functional impotence).

The diagnosis is clinical by questioning about the episode and physical examination. Diagnostic suspicion can be confirmed through an ultrasound of the muscle.

Initial treatment is based on regular anti-inflammatories and painkillers, applying indirect local cooling and relative rest. After a few days, when the pain has subsided, warmth may be applied and gentle stretching may be performed to facilitate functional recovery.

If the pain and functional impotence persists after a few days, consult a specialist to check the lesion.
