Transverse myelitis

Medium urgency
-Moderately severe

Transverse myelitis is inflammation of the spinal cord that affects its entire thickness.

The exact cause is unknown, although it is attributed to a possible viral infection or an autoimmune reaction.

It manifests as back pain with a fast onset, sensitivity and mobility disorders. It tends to be accompanied by alterations in intestinal and bladder function.

It is diagnosed by taking a detailed case history and performing a full physical examination, with an exhaustive neurological study. The most revealing imaging test is an MRI.

Treatment seeks to reduce inflammation to control symptoms, using corticosteroids as anti-inflammatories and standard painkillers to manage the pain. It should be combined with rehabilitation.
