It is an exaggerated reaction of the skin to a stimulus that is not harmful to most people. It is estimated that up to one-third of the world's population has some type of allergy.
There are multiple causes, among them: food, medicines, animal hair, insect bites and contact with metals.
The most frequent symptoms are itching, reddening of the skin and rash with wheals.
Diagnosis is based on clinical history and physical examination. Specific tests are available to detect the triggering substance.
Exposure to the agent causing the allergy should be avoided and symptoms should be treated with antihistamines.
A doctor should be consulted urgently if accompanied by dizziness, difficulty in swallowing or difficulty in breathing.
