Inflammation of the lining of the nose.
Depending on the cause, there are two types of rhinitis: allergic and non-allergic. The former is an immunological reaction to specific known substances, such as allergens.
The most common symptom is nasal congestion due to mucus, usually a clear liquid. This is accompanied by irritation of the nasal ala, itchy eyes and redness of the conjunctiva, sneezing, an irritating cough and a change in the nasal voice. In severe cases there may also be difficulty in breathing, especially when lying down, and if this persists at night it may affect the patient's ability to sleep and cause other symptoms such as headaches, difficulty concentrating, etc.
Diagnosis is made by history, physical examination, laboratory tests and skin allergy tests.
Treatment is aimed at eliminating the cause and relieving the symptoms: nasal decongestants, corticosteroids and nasal rinses with hypertonic seawater.
