Laryngitis - Acute laryngotracheitis (Paediatrics)

Low urgency
--

Inflammation of the upper airway and vocal cords resulting in a partial obstruction of the airway when breathing.

It is usually caused by a viral infection during a cold spell.

Typical symptoms include a cold with barking cough, voice changes, hoarseness, abnormal breathing sounds when inhaling and breathing difficulties, the severity of which is intermittent.

The diagnosis is reached through the clinical history and a physical examination.

It can be treated at home with hydration, humidification, silence and antipyretic drugs if there is fever, alongside supportive care and somatic treatment.
