Perimenopause is a physiological process in a woman's life that precedes the menopause and is characterised by significant hormonal changes. During this period, which can last several years, hormone levels fluctuate, causing physical and emotional symptoms.
Symptoms include: hot flushes, night sweats, menstrual changes (irregular cycles, more or less heavy periods), vaginal dryness, mood changes, sleep problems, fatigue and changes in libido. These symptoms vary from woman to woman and can affect quality of life.
Diagnosis is based on the presence of age-related symptoms in the woman. In some cases, blood tests may be needed to measure hormone levels and rule out other medical conditions.
Treatment includes lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, and hormone therapy to relieve more severe symptoms. There are also non-hormonal options, such as herbal supplements and specific medications to control symptoms.
