A torn muscle is a rupture of muscle fibres in the body. It is classified into different grades depending on the type of injury and the muscle involved.
Common causes include a direct blow or bruise, excessive stretching of the muscle (beyond its ability to stretch) or an abrupt contraction of the muscle.
It manifests itself as pain, haematoma, inflammation and loss of the ability to contract (functional impotence).
The diagnosis is made clinically by asking about the episode and by physical examination. The diagnosis can be confirmed by ultrasound of the muscle.
Initial treatment is based on regular anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication, application of indirect local cooling and relative rest. After a few days, when the pain has subsided, heat can be applied and gentle stretching can be performed to facilitate functional recovery.
If the pain and functional impotence persist after a few days, a specialist should be consulted to assess the lesion.
