Es una enfermedad infecciosa muy virulenta causada por el virus Ébola, con una mortalidad cercana al 60%.
Sólo lo transmiten las personas enfermas no las personas portadoras sin síntomas; por contacto con secreciones corporales, sangre o tejidos implantados.
Se manifiesta con fiebre alta y dolor muscular, dolor de cabeza, dolor al tragar, vómitos y/o sangrados (hematomas, sangrado por la nariz, sangrado digestivo, sangrado del aparato respiratorio). Otros síntomas menos frecuentes: dolor en articulaciones, diarrea, dolor abdominal y falta de apetito.
Se debe sospechar si ha habido contacto previo con personas en las áreas endémicas (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea Conakry y Nigeria). Se confirmará mediante exámenes de laboratorio.
No existe un tratamiento específico. Se deben tratar los síntomas, utilizando analgésicos habituales para el control del dolor y asegurando una correcta hidratación y alimentación.
