Il s'agit d'une déchirure du tissu fin appelé tympan, qui sépare le conduit auditif de l'oreille moyenne. Elle est causée par une infection, des changements soudains de pression, un bruit excessif ou un traumatisme direct. Elle est diagnostiquée par un examen médical et confirmée par une otoscopie. Elle guérit généralement spontanément, bien qu'une intervention chirurgicale puisse parfois être nécessaire. Tant que la déchirure existe, il y a un risque d'infection et de perte d'audition.
