Il s'agit d'une déchirure du tissu fin appelé tympan, qui sépare le conduit auditif externe de l'oreille moyenne. Elle est causée par des infections, des changements de pression soudains, un bruit excessif ou un traumatisme direct. Il est diagnostiqué par examen médical et confirmé par otoscopie. Généralement, sa guérison est spontanée, même si parfois elle peut nécessiter une intervention chirurgicale. Tant que la déchirure existe, il y a un risque d'infection et de perte auditive.
