陰部ヘルペスは単純ヘルペスウイルス（HSV）が引き起こす性行為により伝染する病気です。
HSVには、口や唇に影響する単純ヘルペスウイルス1型と通常陰部ヘルペスを引き起こす単純ヘルペスウイルス2型の2種類があります。
初期に痛みを伴う生殖器潰瘍（性器、直腸および大腿部エリアに作用）の重症化や全身症状（不快感、発熱、食欲減退、筋痛、リンパ節炎など）が見られますが、症状が軽症であったり症状のない場合もあります。
診断は詳細の病歴、全身の身体検査および病変培養を通じて確定されます。
治療法はありませんが、鎮痛薬（パラセタモール、イブプロフェン、サリチル酸など）を用い、潰瘍に直接冷湿布をあてがって治療します。抗レトロウイルス薬アシクロビルは感染症の根治はしませんが、症状の緩和や発生期間を短くすることができます。
