중간 수준의 긴급성

척수와 신경근이 지나가는 공간이 좁아집니다. 해당 위치에 따라 자궁경부 협착증과 요추 협착증으로 구분됩니다. 50세 이상의 사람들에게 습관성으로 증상이 나타나지만 척추 외상을 입은 경우 젊은 사람들에게도 나타날 수 있습니다.

가장 흔한 원인은 퇴행성입니다. 다른 원인으로는 탈출추간판, 척추 외상 또는 종양 등이 있습니다.

신경이 압박되면 해당 부위의 통증, 얼얼함, 감각둔화, 근육 쇠약이 나타납니다. 요추 협착증의 경우 걸을 때 통증이 심해지고 앞으로 구부리거나 앉으면 통증이 완화됩니다. 심각한 경우 요실금이 나타날 수 있습니다.

진단은 임상 문진과 X선 검사 및/또는 자기공명 등의 영상 검사를 통해 이루어집니다.

급성 통증은 일반 진통제, 비스테로이드성 소염제 및/또는 아편제제로 치료해야 합니다. 코르티손은 경구로 투여하거나 신경이 눌리는 부위에 가까운 곳에 주사하여 투여할 수 있습니다. 통증이 만성화되면 삼환계 항우울제, 항경련제 및 물리요법을 추가 할 수 있습니다. 가장 심각한 경우에는 신경근을 감압하는 외과적 수술이 필요할 수 있습니다.

협착증의 중증도는 통증의 강도에 비례하고 통증을 느끼지 않고 걸을 수 있는 거리와 반비례하는 경향이 있습니다. 200미터/218야드 미만을 걸을 때 통증이 느껴지면 협착증이 심각한 것으로 간주되고, 50미터/55야드 미만을 걸을 때 통증이 느껴지면 매우 심각한 것으로 간주됩니다.
