Inflamação de uma articulação devido à infeção de um germe, habitualmente uma bactéria que chega à articulação através do sangue. Afeta principalmente as articulações de joelho, tornozelo e anca.
Manifesta-se com dor e inflamação da articulação, que frequentemente também está vermelha e quente à palpação. A febre pode estar presente, mas não é um sinal indispensável para o diagnóstico.
Diagnostica-se através de questionário clínico e exame físico. Completa-se o estudo com análises de sangue e do líquido articular e de radiografias.
O tratamento é antibiótico e deve-se administrar o mais cedo possível e durante período prolongado. É recomendável evacuar o pus da articulação, inclusive operar, se necessário.
Considera-se uma urgência médica. Se se receber um tratamento precoce e adequado, é muito provável que se recupere sem sequelas.
